Review SpectroNet Collaboration Conference Karlsruhe, March 2025

One of the key highlights of the year for our SpectroNet members is the SpectroNet Collaboration Conference. This time, we gathered in Karlsruhe, Germany, to explore the latest research findings and product innovations in optics, sensor technology, and spectroscopy. The event provided an excellent platform for companies, start-ups, and research institutions to connect and collaborate on pioneering developments in photonics and machine vision.

A Warm Welcome from the Organizers

The conference began with a series of welcome addresses from distinguished representatives of Fraunhofer IOSB and the SpectroNet International Collaboration Cluster. Prof. Dr. Thomas Längle, Henning Schulte, and Dr. Paul-Gerald Dittrich set the stage for a day packed with insightful discussions and cutting-edge technological presentations.

Session 1: Photonic Components for Optical Characterization of Materials

The first session was dedicated to advancements in photonic components. The speakers presented innovative technologies, such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for aluminum sorting, advanced SWIR and UV cameras, and monolithic spectral sensors. Notable highlights included:

  • Laser Sources for Aluminum Sorting by LIBS - Dr. Torsten Ledig (AMS Technologies AG)

  • Applications of Monolithic Spectral Sensors - Sven Schönfelder (Insion GmbH)

  • Linear Variable Filters for a Mars Rover (2028) - Ian Reilly (Vortex Optical Coatings Ltd)

  • Modular Spectral Imaging: Tailoring Technology to Your Needs - Stefano Guerrieri (ams OSRAM)

  • Bridging the Gap: Partnering for Innovation in Spectral Detection - Prof. Dr. Robert Brunner (University of Applied Sciences Jena)

Between presentations, attendees had the opportunity to explore the latest applications at exhibitor booths, networking with leading industry experts and innovators.

Lunch Break & Industrial Exhibition

During the lunch break, participants engaged in lively discussions while browsing the parallel industrial exhibition, where companies showcased their latest products and solutions.

Session 2: Photonic Systems for Optical Characterization

The second session featured discussions on high-speed computational imaging, next-generation hyperspectral technology, and AI-based surface anomaly detection. Some key takeaways included:

  • High-Speed Computational Imaging - Michael Stelzl (MSTVision GmbH)

  • AI-Based Surface Anomaly Detection with solino® Technology - Dr. Daniel Kraus (Opto GmbH)

  • Broadband Multispectral Photonic Systems for Industrial Applications - Dr. Maik Rosenberger (TU Ilmenau)

  • Multimodal Imaging Systems for Complex Object Characterization - Dr. Paul-Gerald Dittrich (Fraunhofer IOF)

Coffee Break & Exhibition Networking

The mid-afternoon coffee break provided an excellent opportunity for participants to further connect, exchange ideas, and experience live demonstrations from exhibitors.

Session 3: New Developments in Optical Characterization

The final session of the day focused on groundbreaking innovations in optical characterization. Highlights included:

  • Enhancing Sensitivity of Hyperspectral Cameras with Ultra-Black Coatings - Alexander Telle (Acktar - ACM Coatings GmbH)

  • AI-Assisted Metallographic Image Evaluation - Dr. Thomas Schroeter (ifw Jena)

  • High-Speed Machine Vision for Optical Material Characterization - Thomas Detjen (Emergent Vision Technologies GmbH)

  • Data-Driven Sensor Systems for Fruit Quality Assessment with AI - Anna Taphorn (Fraunhofer IOSB)

  • Future Collaboration in Photonics and Machine Vision - Dr. Paul-Gerald Dittrich (SpectroNet)

Evening Event: Beer, Pretzels & Live Demonstrations

The conference concluded with an informal evening event featuring traditional German beer and pretzels. Participants enjoyed live demonstrations and hands-on experiences with new technologies, fostering deeper collaboration and connections within the industry.

Looking Forward to the Next Conference

With overwhelmingly positive feedback, the SpectroNet Collaboration Conference in Karlsruhe was a tremendous success. The discussions extended far beyond the presentations, and the networking opportunities allowed for exciting new partnerships. We thank all participants for contributing to this event and look forward to our next gathering in Zoetermeer (NL) in cooperation with TKH VISION Group on 17-18th September.

Pre-registration is open now!

Sincerely, The SpectroNet Team
