The Fraunhofer IOSB is one of the largest institutes within the Fraunhofer Society's ICT network. With four locations in Germany and the outsourcing office in Beijing, the Fraunhofer IOSB is solidly positioned in four major economic regions and close to its customers.

The three core competencies of the Fraunhofer IOSB optronics, system engineering and image analysis lend it the distinctive profile. Optronics comprises the boundary between electromagnetic radiation and electrical and electronic signals. It converts information about the appearance of our environment and their objects into electrical signals, and in the direction of electrical signals into optical radiation.
Image analysis includes processing, real-time processing as well as automatic and interactive information retrieval from images and videos.

Energy, Water and Environment

A sustainable and affordable energy supply, a safe access to clean water and an efficient environmental protection: information and communication are necessary to develop suitable solutions for these future markets.

Security

Optronic aspects, multimodal surveillance robotics (on land, sea and in the air), development of ultra-modern evaluation methods, support of interoperable standards with the real-time exchange of information for risk detection while simultaneously accounting for data protection aspects already in the system design and assistance in the situation analysis and human-machine interaction in situation centers.

Visual Inspection

The portfolio of technical solutions covers a broad range of services from feasibility studies to process development, practical validation to demonstrators and marketable end systems.

Automation

The Automation business unit stands for system solutions that work on any level of industrial automation, aiming at consistent and integrated data and information management. The efforts of the Automation business unit are centered on real-time IT for complex production processes.

Defense

The IOSB’s core competency lies in research into optronic systems for human and computer vision, real-time processing and analysis of imagery, and full-motion video as well as the necessary information and communication technology for the use of images in network-enabled operations.
